WWII Tail Gunner Survives 18,000-Foot Fall Without Parachute

A 21-year-old tail gunner named Nicholas Alkemade survived a jump from his burning Avro Lancaster bomber over Germany in 1944, falling approximately 18,000 feet (5,500 meters) without a parachute. He sustained only minor injuries, specifically a sprained leg.
