Why Do Pearls Dissolve in Vinegar?

Pearls dissolve in vinegar because they're made of calcium carbonate, which is a base. Vinegar contains acetic acid, and when the two mix, a chemical reaction occurs. The acid breaks down the calcium carbonate, causing the pearl to dissolve. This reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, which you might see as small bubbles on the pearl's surface.
