In 1992, 18-year-old John Thompson was home alone on his family's farm in North Dakota when a farming accident ripped both of his arms from his body. Despite massive blood loss, he staggered to his house and used a pencil held in his mouth to dial a phone to call for help. He survived, and both his arms were successfully reattached in a six-hour surgery.
